L’expérience est un maître mot pour les cursus en création littéraire que l’université française reconnaît depuis dix ans. La référence à John Dewey et en particulier à L’art comme expérience y est devenue un incontournable, qui fonde l’armature critique de ce cheminement désormais possible dans les études de lettres. Regarder la littérature sous l’égide de l’expérience, ne serait pas faire cas d’une méthode d’examen originale, expérimentée dans ces cursus, et susceptible de renouveler l’enquête herméneutique ? Pour en frayer les pistes, l’étude commence par quelques repères terminologiques qui permettent d’identifier pourquoi faire l’expérience de l’écriture de la littérature se place dans le sillage d’une philosophie de la connaissance. Elle examine comment différents courants critiques se trouvent mobilisés par les penseurs de la recherche-création, avant de regarder de plus près la notion d’expérience dans la pensée de John Dewey. L’articulation aux cursus universitaires se fait ensuite par la caractérisation de trois manières, parmi d’autres possibles, de ménager des trajets expérientiels dans le champ de l’écriture créative, en tenant compte de la matière vive du vécu, des lectures et de l’environnement du scripteur. L’ouverture finale propose de relier ces propositions pour faire vivre une expérience de littérature à l’université à ce que la recherche sur les corpus contemporains tend à faire reconnaître comme un tournant praxique de la littérature.
