Varying dose levels of methylmercuric \nchloride (MMC), 1000 ppm (5 mg through 15 mglkg of \nbody weight), were administered via an intragastric tube \nto pregnant ICR SwissIWebster mice on day 9 of \ngestation. The animals were killed on gestational day 18 \nand the fetuses removed. Fetal lung sections were \nprocessed for light and electron microscopy. A group of \nanimals treated with physiological saline in a similar \nmannner served as the controls. The fetal lungs from \ntreated animals were hypoplastic and retarded in \ndevelopment. The severity of pulmonary changes \nincreased with the dose-levels of MMC. Vacuolation and \nlysis of mitochondria were seen in fetal lungs. \nMitochondrial damage increased in severity with doselevel \nof methylmercuric chloride.
