Para concluir minha tese de doutorado, sobre a amizade duradoura, foi realizada uma revisão bibliográfica sobre a sociabilidade, entre outros assuntos. Desta forma, tomei contato com o conceito de "comunidade virtual", teorizado por Raquel Recuero. Ao estudar fotologs no Brasil, Recuero diferenciou comunidades virtuais de redes sociais e demonstrou que as "redes sociais online" podem estabelecer novas formas sociais de grupos e comunidades. Já Santaella e Lemos (2010) analisaram o Twitter, outra rede social e apresentaram o conceito de "sociabilidade em rede": da ênfase na "interatividade entre humano e máquina" (da década de 90), passou-se para a "experiência direta de sociabilidade em rede mediada pelo computador". Já o uso do telefone celular tem se mostrado fundamental, quando se consideram novas formas de comunicação interpessoal e sociabilidade - o que foi chamado de "sociabilidade do telefone" por Richard Ling. Em minha pesquisa qualitativa, pude ainda constatar outra mudança social no campo das relações de amizade dos indivíduos entrevistados. Trata-se do predomínio da "sociabilidade do telefone em rede" entre as formas de sociabilidade urbana, resultante da preponderância do uso do telefone celular e da "comunicação eletrônica".
