Ce roman, caractéristique d’un premier ouvrage, contient une part typique d’investissement autobiographique chez le narrateur et personnage principal. Notre protagoniste est en effet un certain Jonathan,Québécois ayant fait des études doctorales à Harvard, ce qui correspond aux informations biographiques sur l’auteur données en quatrième de couverture. Il s’agit d’une sorte de bildungsroman, roman sentimental et roman de campus où notre narrateur, la vingtaine, cherche à travers différentes figures féminines, aux noms étonnamment similaires, à reproduire, oublier ou remémorer une relation marquante antérieure. L’histoire de cet amour perdu se relate rétrospectivement à la première personne sur soixante-deux chapitres et plus de cinq cent pages durant un road trip américain entre Boston et Chicago. À ce fil narratif s’ajoute l’invention collaborative avec son amie de voyage d’un évangile soi-disant “retrouvé”et qui pourrait faire scandale à sa publication. Ce projet créateur, sans doute une mise en abyme pour la rédaction du roman même, aurait pour base l’existence d’un frère de Jésus et d’une série de substitutions et de subterfuges. Le récit est ainsi régulièrement ponctué de souvenirs divers et de longs passages dialogués mêlant aux gloses bibliques les éléments de leur détournement. Enfin, l’introduction tardive d’un complot, de quelques morts subites et de passages oniriques multiplie le nombre de trames narratives, et l’ensemble perd son élan sinon sa cohérence. L’auteur a du talent mais, en fin de compte, L’astronome dur à cuire aurait bénéficié d’un sérieux coup de révision et de resserrement. Rares sont les premiers romans qui sont aussi des chefsd ’œuvre; cependant, celui-ci, on peut l’espérer, fournira à son auteur, s’il continue à écrire, un matériel à raffiner et à explorer.
