Abstract
Ausgehend von der Leitfrage, wie man „ein wahrhaftes Genieleben“ porträtiert, verfasst Stefan Zweig Goethes Biographie zwischen Historie und Psychologie in der meisterhaft kondensierten Künstlergeschichte Die Marienbader Elegie (1923), die zu den „schlagkräftigsten“ Sternstunden der Menschheit (1927) zählt. Im Mittelpunkt der Erzählung steht die späte, unglückliche Liebe des alten Dichters zur jungen Ulrike von Levetzow, oder, genauer gesagt, die Entstehung der schönen Elegie seiner Altersjahre (1823), die Goethe in einem neuen „Werthersturm“ rettet. Zweig konzentriert die ganze Existenz des Olympiers in einer erlösenden Schreibszene, als der alte Meister der Faustischen Verjüngung entsagt und sein Lebenswerk vollendet. Der Beitrag fokussiert sich auf Zweigs Darstellung des „Mysteriums der Schöpfung“, das der Autor in der modernen Welt in Gefahr sieht, und das für den Künstler ein vernichtendes, dämonisches Element enthält.
