Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Rapid onset vasodilation (ROV) increases exercising muscle blood flow at exercise onset. Whether it can be enhanced by prior “priming” exercise is not known. PURPOSE: We tested the hypothesis that the ROV response to a single contraction would be enhanced 6 minutes following rhythmic maximal effort exercise but not following rhythmic moderate exercise. METHODS: Eight university aged male participants performed supine, heart level, single 1 second isometric forearm contractions at 15%, 40% and 75% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) before and 6 minutes after maximal effort forearm exercise (10 x 1 s maximal effort contractions over 30 seconds) and moderate effort forearm exercise (1 s contractions at 30% MVC until total contraction impulse accumulation equaled maximal effort exercise). Arterial blood pressure (ABP; finger photoplethysmography) and forearm blood flow (FBF; echo and Doppler ultrasound) were measured. Forearm vascular conductance was calculated as FBF/ABP. RESULTS: Time to peak flow following a single contraction at any %MVC was not altered by moderate exercise but was faster following maximal effort exercise for 40% and 75% MVC (3.6 ±0.2 vs. 5.0 ±0.5 and 4.5 ±0.3 vs. 5.8 ±0.4 cardiac cycles following contraction, P<0.05). However, the peak increase in FVC was not altered by maximal effort or moderate exercise for any %MVC single contractions (Pre vs Post Maximal Effort: 15% MVC 0.64 ±0.2 vs. 0.64 ±0.2, 40% MVC 1.3 ±0.2 vs. 1.5 ±0.2, 75% MVC 1.9 ±0.2 vs. 2.0 ±0.2 ml/min/mmHg, P>0.05) (Pre vs Post Moderate: 15% MVC 0.61 ±0.2 vs. 0.55 ±0.1, 40% MVC 1.3 ±0.2 vs. 1.3 ±0.2, 75% MVC 1.9 ±0.2 vs. 1.9 ±0.2 ml/min/mmHg, P>0.05) . Both maximal effort and moderate exercise resulted in a greater increase in FVC in the first cardiac cycle post-single contraction for 40% MVC (Pre vs Post Maximal Effort: 0.6 ±0.1 vs. 0.77 ±0.1 ml/min/mmHg, P<0.05) (Pre vs Post Moderate: 0.75 ±0.1 vs. 0.9 ±0.2 ml/min/mmHg, P<0.05) but not 15 or 75% MVC. CONCLUSION: for the specific exercise intensities and durations in this study, a brief bout of maximal effort exercise increases how quickly rapid onset vasodilation reaches peak following a single contraction. However, the peak increase in vasodilation does not appear to be altered. Further investigation of durations of priming exercise and the time following priming exercise may be warranted.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
