Abstract
James De Mille, professeur et romancier canadien (1833-1880), est l'auteur d'un roman aussi exceptionnel qu'inclassable, L'étrange manuscrit trouvé dans un cylindre de cuivre, publié en volume en 1888. Répertorié par nombre de dictionnaires et d'encyclopédies, il est considéré comme un classique de la fiction canadienne depuis les années 1960. Cette oeuvre hybride (fantastique, aventures, monde perdu, utopie, voyage extraordinaire, fable et roman sentimental) a été comparée aux histoires de merveilleux scientifique de Jules Verne ou de H. G. Wells. "C'est l'un des meilleurs romans de science-fiction du XIXème siècle", écrit John Clute. Ajoutons: la première oeuvre de fantasy canadienne, alliant le merveilleux, l'horreur, l'aventure, la satire. Cette oeuvre extravagante affirme son originalité, sans rien dissimuler de ses démarquages littéraires, de L'Utopie de Thomas More, Arthur Gordon Pym de Poe, en passant par Gulliver et Robinson Crusoe. Adam More conte ses singulières aventures dans l'Antarctique, qui le mènent jusqu'au pays perdu des Kosekins, miroir inversé et grotesque de nos sociétés, d'où il tentera de s'échapper avec sa bien-aimée sur le dos d'un dragon volant. Le lecteur est averti: une fois le manuscrit ouvert, impossible de le refermer.
