Abstract
L’histoire des traductions françaises d’Alice au pays des merveilles témoigne d’une convergence croissante des normes de la traduction pour enfants et de la traduction pour adultes, au point que les éditeurs pour la jeunesse ont abondamment fait appel depuis les années 1970 à des traductions initialement destinées aux adultes. La traduction d’Anne Herbauts et de sa sœur Isabelle, publiée chez Casterman en 2002, vient rompre avec cette pratique et suggère qu’il y aurait des normes traductionnelles propres aux textes destinés à de jeunes lecteurs. Mais est-il possible de gommer toutes les aspérités du récit, d’entreprendre une nouvelle traduction d’Alice dans une totale ignorance des visées esthétiques et du contexte historique de l’œuvre, de la glose qui lui a été consacrée et des choix faits par les traducteurs antérieurs? Traduire un classique, c’est nécessairement prendre en charge l’héritage—quitte à venir, en toute connaissance de cause, bousculer celui-ci.
