Abstract
Le rôle de la musique dans la conception de l’écriture chez Nancy Huston est primordial : elle a comparé son choix du français comme langue d’expression littéraire à celui du clavecin par opposition au piano, son abandon du registre dynamique et donc émotif de ce dernier en faveur du son pur et inchangeant du premier faisant écho à son rejet de l’anglais maternel. Pourtant l’anglais et sa musique continuent de résonner à travers son œuvre, malgré ou peut-être bien à cause des rémanences d’expériences affectives et corporelles (surtout le départ de sa mère) charriées par cette langue. Dans son premier roman, Les Variations Goldberg, un rêve d’exécution froide au clavecin se complique devant la réalité double du corps et d’autrui ; l’anglais s’y fait discrètement entendre. Douze ans plus tard, la langue maternelle reprend le dessus dans Plainsong où c’est à travers la musique du corps, le chant (cantiques religieux et chansons populaires) mais aussi les cris de joie incohérents des cowboys, qu’Huston évoque les vastes paysages vides de son Canada natal. Une voix complexe, parfois contradictoire, toujours en évolution, et un dialogue interne, polyphonique, se développent à travers les romans et essais de cette auteure bilingue.
