Si le titre de cet ouvrage vous dit quelque chose, cherchez… ou reportez-vous d’emblée à la page 34, où l’on rappelle aux moins jeunes d’entre nous qu’il reprend le titre d’une chanson célèbre du groupe The Cure mettant en exergue une des injonctions de la masculinité : ne pas pleurer ! Le sous-titre, plus académique, explicite la visée du livre : explorer la question des « coûts » de la domination masculine, de manière scientifique et en se démarquant des discours militants, particulièrement répandus au Québec, qui assènent que les féministes sont allées trop loin et que l’on assiste aujourd’hui à une crise de l’identité masculine aussi dommageable pour la société dans son ensemble que pour les hommes. L’objectif n’est pas seulement de faire connaître des débats et toute une littérature majoritairement nord-américaine – dont on découvre l’abondance –, mais plus fondamentalement d’explorer la question de la domination masculine en n’occultant pas ses coûts pour les hommes, les investissements permanents qu’elle exige d’eux et les inévitables « ratés » qu’elle comporte. On se situe donc ici clairement dans le registre de la construction sociale des identités de genre, champ loin d’être vierge aujourd’hui, mais avec une optique originale en France et sans nul doute heuristique. La question posée est celle de « l’effectivité de la domination masculine » (p. 14), de ce qui doit être fait au quotidien, et à quel prix, pour qu’elle perdure, tant pour ceux qui sont mal à l’aise face aux normes hégémoniques de la « masculinité » que pour ceux qui s’efforcent de s’y conformer.
