Cannady and Jennifer Ferng’s recently published edited volume, Crafting Enlightenment: Artisanal Histories and Transnational Networks, presents ten essays on the operations of artisanal practice in the arts and sciences during the long eighteenth century. The book, which began as a colloquium titled “Artisanal Praxis and State Power” at the Clark Art Institute in December 2017, adopts an interdisciplinary approach, with contributors who are leading scholars in the fields of history, history of art and architecture, and history of science and technology. The editors’ intentions are twofold: first, to interrogate the historical category of the artisan across a range of geographies, including Europe, the Americas, Asia, the Levant, and Oceania; and second, to consider how different political entities mobilized artisanal praxis for purposes of state building.
