Echenoz a exploré pour mieux s'en distancier de nombreuses formes romanesques, roman policier, roman d'espionnage, roman de science-fiction, avant de s'attaquer à un genre a priori non romanesque, ou plutôt non fictionnel, la biographie « sans scrupules biographiques » (précise la quatrième de couverture de Des Éclairs), avec la trilogie (ce nonobstant sous-titrée « romans ») Ravel (2006), Courir (2008), Des Éclairs (2010). Puis, en 2012, il publie 14, consacré à la Grande Guerre, titre associé sur la couverture à la mention roman ce qui tendrait à rattacher le livre au genre du roman historique. Entre la période des romans de pure fiction et la période d'inspiration non fictionnelle, un changement stylistique d'importance intervient, la disparition du passé simple dont l'emploi avait pourtant signé pour la critique le retour triomphant du récit, au profit du passé composé et du présent. Entre les trois biographies et 14, le changement est d'abord dans l'objet : non plus la vie d'un homme du berceau à la tombe, mais une période, de la déclaration de guerre le 1 er août 1914 à la fin de celle-ci, « au cours de la bataille de Mons qui a été la dernière », autrement dit, pas la bataille du 23 août 1914, la plus célèbre, mais celle, moins connue, qui opposa les Canadiens aux Allemands et qui prit fin avec l'armistice du 11 novembre 1918. Dans ce travail, on voudrait donc montrer comment Echenoz détourne le roman historique, en introduisant une thématisation certes historique, mais plus anthropologique qu'individuelle ou héroïque, et en écrivant un vrai roman échenozien, avec les caractéristiques d'écriture qu'on lui connaît, mais plus particulièrement avec un travail sur le point de vue très moderne, parce qu'influencé par les techniques cinématographiques, pour aboutir à une subtile alchimie qui tout en donnant à lire une fiction, fait du narrateur et du lecteur des témoins presque directs de l'Histoire, où les personnages en tant qu'individus ne sont pas aussi importants qu'en tant que représentation socio-historique.
