A morte continua sendo tabu na sociedade, reforçado pela dificuldade humana em lidar com a própria terminalidade. Assim, os profissionais que enfrentam a morte em seu contexto de trabalho, se deparam cotidianamente com uma questão que, assim como todos os indivíduos, querem evitar. Nesse contexto, objetivou-se investigar os sentidos simbólicos sobre a morte e o morrer e as repercussões na humanização do cuidado. Foram entrevistados 11 profissionais de uma Unidade de Terapia Intensiva de um hospital escola do interior do Rio Grande do Sul. As entrevistas foram analisadas segundo a metodologia de Análise de Conteúdo de Bardin. Foram discutidas categorias sobre: concepções dualísticas da morte (natural x sobrenatural); as dificuldades de lidar com a terminalidade; as concepções de luto; as dimensões da humanização do cuidado; e os empecilhos para o cuidado humanizado. De acordo com os resultados da pesquisa, considera-se fulcral que os trabalhadores analisem o seu contexto de trabalho para identificar processos que podem gerar sofrimento psíquico. Deste modo, é fundamental potencializar momentos de discussão e planejamento, onde o trabalho seja de cuidado para com os sujeitos, sejam eles, equipe, pacientes ou familiares.
