L’étude de la réception du célèbre roman de Louis Hémon, Maria Chapdelaine (1916), s’est jusqu’ici concentrée sur les pays avec lesquels le roman entretient un lien évident : la France, pays d’origine de son auteur, et le Canada. Hémon y émigre en 1911 et se rend à Péribonka, sur les rives du Lac-Saint-Jean, au nord de Québec, afin d’y côtoyer les « paysans-défricheurs » venus de France quelques siècles plus tôt. Il vit six mois parmi eux et compose Maria Chapdelaine, roman polymorphe à la fois histoire d’amour, récit de voyage et mythe des origines pour le Québec. Dans le cadre de notre thèse sur la fortune littéraire de Louis Hémon, nous menons une enquête sur la réception internationale de ce roman, traduit en plus de vingt langues. L’existence de traductions en langues minoritaires – gallois, gaélique, albanais, flamand, mais aussi les langues scandinaves – nous a amenée à nous interroger sur la réception de l’œuvre dans les pays concernés : était-elle équivalente à la réception française, ou bien ouvrait-elle de nouvelles perspectives ?
