Abstract
Agamemnon hante les pages de The Tragedy of Orestes par Thomas Goffe. L’ombre du père obsède Oreste, qui transporte ses os, invoque son âme et rêve de vengeance tout au long de la pièce. Si le fantôme d’Agamemnon n’intervient pas dès l’orée de la pièce pour identifier ses meurtriers, c’est que cette apparition retardée a lieu lors de l’acmé de l’action théâtrale. Suivre l’itinéraire global du mort permet de comprendre la présence dédoublée d’Agamemnon comme le nœud dramatique, symbolique et visuel de la pièce. D’un côté son corps suit un itinéraire de dégradation progressive qui souligne l’échec des rituels de deuil et prépare l’apparition. En parallèle, le spectre se dévoile d’abord vocalement avant d’apparaître visuellement, présence troublante autant que désirée. Enfin les sorts de Canidia qui s’appuient sur les os du mort pour en évoquer une vision magique relient les deux moitiés du roi et posent la question de l’interprétation potentiellement démoniaque de l’apparition spectrale.
