Abstract
Among the considerable and still growing literature on China's ascendance and the rise of the ‘people's currency’, the renminbi (RMB), this new book stands out with its unconventional approach. Rather than focusing on China's goals, motivations and strategies, Hyoung-kyu Chey investigates the reactions of other countries. Specifically, Chey examines government and private sector responses to the RMB's internationalization in four countries: United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea and United States. Chey chooses these four countries for their comparability (all democracies with advanced economies) and for their distinctions (varying geopolitical relations with China and positions in the international financial system). For the bulk of the research, the author analyses primary documents and provides insights from extensive interviews with government officials, private actors and local experts. This book presents a nuanced account of the ‘reactive currency statecraft’ of these major economic powers vis-à-vis the RMB's internationalization, and sheds valuable light on the rationale underlying each country's policies.
