Conditions de l’autonomie et individualisme démocratique dans la philosophie morale et politique d’Alain Renaut

Abstract
Cet article saisit le concept d’autonomie à partir de l’œuvre du philosophe français Alain Renaut. Nous positionnons succinctement sa proposition philosophique et explicitons ses traits distinctifs principaux (1re partie), mettons en lumière l’opposition structurante des figures conceptuelles du sujet autonome et de l’individu indépendant en son sein (2e partie). Nous montrons ensuite que celle-ci se décline avec une grande fécondité dans son travail des tensions constitutives et des équilibres possibles entre libéralisme, démocratie et république, sur fond d’un humanisme renouvelé (3e partie), puis esquissons les manières dont Renaut explore sur ces bases les thématiques philosophiques contemporaines de la justice, de la diversité et de la vulnérabilité (4e partie). Nous proposons enfin quelques leçons du parcours philosophique ainsi étudié pour ce qui concerne les fins et moyens du travail intellectuel et éthique aujourd’hui, et quelques pistes de prolongements critiques et prospectifs des thèses de Renaut quant à ce que pourrait être une société démocratique des individus autonomes (5e partie).
