Abstract
Le musée d’Archéologie nationale abrite d’importantes collections paléolithiques mises au jour, pour une grande partie d’entre elles, pendant la première moitié du xxe siècle, voire à la fin du xixe. C’est le cas du mobilier provenant de la grotte d’Isturitz, en Pays basque, constitué par Emmanuel Passemard, il y a près de cent ans, puis par Suzanne et René de Saint-Périer, quelques décennies plus tard. L’historique de ces collections, de leur découverte à leur diffusion auprès de tous les publics, en passant par leur acquisition, conservation et présentation, illustre parfaitement le potentiel que revêtent encore de nos jours les séries préhistoriques majeures issues de fouilles archéologiques anciennes. Bien qu’elles soient réputées poser des difficultés contextuelles et stratigraphiques, elles peuvent faire l’objet d’une étude historiographique et archéologique, afin de parvenir à une relecture des occupations, critique et constructive, toujours riche d’enseignements scientifiques.
