Abstract
Early North American bookbinding, whether practised in Canada or colonial and post-colonial America, understandably mimicked the mother traditions of France, Great Britain, and Germany in the former two instances, and Spain in the latter. This chapter will first discuss three American bookbindings dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries that serve as examples for the wide range of binding work produced in America. There will be a special section covering the 18th and 19th century Anabaptist devotionals bound in the Philadelphia area, and a summary of the economic importance of blank-book work.
