Abstract
Cet article est consacré à la thèse de la masculinisation du français, déployée par Éliane Viennot.Cette thèse soutient que des hommes lettrés au milieu du XVII e siècle ont sciemment modifié le français pour y diminuer la présence du genre grammatical féminin.Cet argumentaire historique légitime en partie l'écriture inclusive contemporaine.À cet égard, la présente étude ne porte pas sur un mot polémique, mais sur le genre polémique qu'est devenu le masculin dans les sociétés francophones.L'objectif est d'apporter un contre-argumentaire historique à deux analyses proposées dans la thèse de la masculinisation, à savoir la question du e féminin en poésie au XVI e siècle et le féminin des noms de métiers au XVII e siècle.À la lueur de l'histoire de la grammaire, de la lexicographie et de la langue, l'étude réfute la thèse de la masculinisation dans le cas des deux phénomènes discutés.
