L’image qui sert d’affiche à la journée et de symbolisation de la « visibilité » a été réalisée par Pierre Senges. Elle s’inspire d’un court-métrage du réalisateur canadien Norman McLaren, 1957, intitulé Il était une chaise [A Chairy talei]. Dans ce film en noir et blanc, on voit, sur une scène, un homme essayer de s’asseoir sur une chaise pour lire tranquillement un livre. Or la chaise se dérobe à lui. S’ensuit une course-poursuite chorégraphiée, entre incompréhension, agacement et finalement apprivoisement : ce n’est qu’une fois que l’homme aura fait venir la chaise sur ses genoux que celle-ci acceptera la réciproque. Un vers de la fable de La Fontaine « Le lion et le rat » sert alors de morale à l’histoire : « Il faut, autant qu’on peut, obliger tout le monde ». Si Il était une chaise est d’abord un film ludique qui illustre le rapport que les hommes entretiennent avec leurs objets « techniques », il peut aussi constituer une allégorie possible de l’artiste et de son outil, de l’artiste et de sa place. C’est aussi avec une chaise mais sur un mode beaucoup moins joueur que l’écrivain Camille de Toledo a organisé en 2011 une expérience intitulée « Hantologie »ii, à l’occasion d’une résidence à la Ménagerie de verre.
