Abstract
I continue learning the ropes as new Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry. This job would not be possible without the great support we receive from ACS and our great team of Associate Editors and their Editorial Assistants. Please thank them occasionally for their service. With mixed emotions, we've said goodbye and heartfelt thanks to Gavin Reid, long-time Associate Editor.Gavin had a meaningful impact on JASMS over the years. In addition to doing an exceptional job handling manuscripts, Gavin shaped the journal in multiple ways.He was the inaugural editor of the "News and Views" (which will soon be renamed "Viewpoint" in an ACS article type consolidation), and he established the biennial "Emerging Investigators" focus, which is so popular that we've moving it to an annual issue.Gavin's vision was to use this focus issue to help nurture and celebrate the early career success of our next generation stars in our field. We will miss Gavin and his suggestions, but he'll probably be too busy to miss us as he takes on the task of conference Chair of the 2024 International Mass Spectrometry Conference (IMSC2024) to be held in Melbourne from 17 to 23 August, 2024.As Gavin departs, we welcome Helen Cooper as our newest Associate Editor.Helen has been a wonderful supporter of JASMS over the years, submitting high numbers of quality papers to the journal and serving as an outstanding reviewer.Helen is located at the

Full frame machine prediction
Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one source (direct Gemma or distilled Codex), not a consensus.
