Abstract
The engraver Jean Boeuf (or Beuf), born in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon at an unknown date and active between the extreme end of the 16th century and the first third of the 17th century, is documented as a guard at the Avignon mint, as well as "tailleur et essayeur" at the mints of Carpentras and Orange until his death in 1628. Absent from art history studies, his case is nevertheless exemplary of the very late adaptation of motifs from Fontainebleau in Provence, which until then had been resistant to this model. The various works in his corpus show an artist who is fully dependent on the motifs of the second school of Fontainebleau and the style in vogue at the court of Henry IV, while at the same time retaining the memory of its first representatives, particularly in his decorative repertoire. This article thus proposes to reconstitute the forgotten production of Jean Boeuf, based on the few literary sources that mention him, and examine how he contributes to a certain renewal of Provençal art by adapting the models from Fontainebleau.
