Abstract
Camilla Greghetta Erculiani (c.1540-c.1590), the daughter of a Paduan merchant, is likely the first Italian woman to engage with natural philosophy, envision herself as a natural philosopher, and publish in this field.The volume itself, the first English-language translation of Erculiani's Letters on Natural Philosophy-ushered into print by the venerable Other Voice in Early Modern Europe series-constitutes an incredibly important contribution to our understanding of women's engagement with and impact on early modern science and its history.As was often the case, Camilla was fortunate enough to possess both the background and the entourage necessary to undertake her remarkable feat.To begin with, her father promoted her education and interest in pharmaceutics by brokering not only one but two marriages to two apothecaries, Alvise Stella and Giacomo Erculiani.Another sign that fortune was on this young woman's side was that her first husband bequeathed his pharmacy, Tre Stelle, to her upon his death.That detail not only ensured Camilla's active involvement in running the business but also enhanced her eligibility in the eyes of her second husband who, astutely, allowed for the continuation of a joint venture.As Paula Findlen remarks, Camilla's "professional ambitions" to become "a learned apothecary in her own right" (15) is extraordinary given the historical period in which she sought this recognition.Crucially, the pharmacy itself functioned as the intersection of ideas percolating in two otherwise distinct environments: the city and the university.In fact, the pharmacy may be regarded-in retrospectas a pseudo-academy, a space not only open to heterodox ideas but one which also welcomed more diverse participants, including women.It follows, Findlen suggests, that Erculiani's Letters, published in 1584 (Kracow: Stamperia di Lazaro), may be read as a trait d'union, an historical artifact that can "help us to bridge [the] gap" (21) between the classroom and its
