Questo forse spiega il successo dei deodoranti su vasta scala al giorno d'oggi.L'avversione per l'altro è in natura molto diffusa per un principio universale di difesa e di autoconservazione della propria specie, presente in buona parte del regno animale, noto in tutta la biologia dai ratti agli umani come risulta dimostrato da Sebeok ed altri nel grosso volume sulla zoosemiotica del 1964.Allo stesso momento, dalla filiazione e maternità delle zanzare che difendono le loro uova aggregandole in zattere galleggianti fino alla schiusa delle larve, e su su fino alle cure epimeletiche dei mammiferi e degli umani, la difesa della prole, della progenie e delle aggregazioni di esseri via via più complesse, fornisce l'indicazione che vi sono vari gradi entro i quali i conspecifici, famiglia, branco, tribù, nazione si integrano con i "nostri", contrapposti ai "loro", cioè agli "altri".
