Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The old master of surrealism in the cinema, Louis Buñuel, found the Italian style melodramatic, yet in the "Pro and Con" chapter of his autobiography he speaks of the Italian cinematic tradition and Italian cineastes and how he "especially liked [De Sica's] Shoeshine, Umberto D, and The Bicycle Thief [and] on the other hand [how he] detested Rossellini's Open City."(224-225) While Bunuel's personal remarks are evidently influenced by his penchant for the abstract and illogic!style characteristic of his own work, the peculiarly real and realistic Italian tradition has bestowed upon the Italian cineastes' works continuous admiration and success with audiences and critics alike. From Shakespeare's play writing to the contemporary televised MOW, Italians are often portrayed as "naturally" inclined to an emotionally charged style. In the cinema, this credibly patterned representation and natural impegno that transpires within it has been conceptualized and categorized as the "school of realism."(Bazin II, 60-70) The Italian realist tradition peaked in the cinema during the post WWII years with the films of the neorealist period, and since then an aesthetic of realism has been sowed to its film production within different categories including the Commedia all'italiana tradition.(Bondanella 366-376) Italy's brand of realism is still a signature of guaranteed success in its cinema output today. How does such an admired characterization attached to a people, compare with the contemporary generation of Italian-Canadian filmmakers? In other words, where do their formal style and varying elements of ethnic voice place them in relation to the realist tradition of the Mediterranean world?am using these terms in a "descriptive" rather then "negative" sense.2The article's aim is that of voicing a general opinion rather then providing analyses of specific works, which shall be the focus of future developments into the Italian-Canadian filmmakers' studies scene.Feature films by Italian-Canadian directors and/or producers, recently screened at the Italian Film Festival in Toronto, the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Quebec, and the Festival of Italian Cinema in Toronto, are listed among the works cited at the end of the article.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
