The peculiarly 'real and realistic' Italian tradition has bestowed upon the Italian cineastes' works continuous admiration and success with audiences and critics alike.One of the reasons may be found in the opinion expressed by writer and film critic Andr Bazin.In the chapter entitled "De Sica metteur-en-scne" (61-78) of his Qu'est-ce que le cinma?Bazin speaks of the originality of Italian neorealism, which compared with other chief schools of innovative cinema such as the Soviet Cinema, never made "reality the servant of some a priori point of view" (Bazin 64).From the 1940s to the end of the 1980s the renown Italian realist tradition has been a much discussed subject, both at the journalistic and scholarly level, and just as Italian cinema has been slowly taking on new forms,!the question of reality and realism has re-emerged at the end of the twentieth and beginning of the twenty-first centuries and has become once again a topical issue of debate.The purpose of this paper is to provide a self-reflexive discussion of my film A Self-conscious Mise-en-scne, an experimental film shot on approximately 3300 feet of 16mm black and white Kodak film 7222 100DXN455,2 against both the backdrop of realism as a theoretical approach and the practice of experimental filmmaking in a broader sense.As a Canadian filmmaker, born in Italy and educated both in Italy and Canada, I share many traits of the Italian realist cinematic tradition, yet,
