Le terrain de l’entreprise fédère de multiples approches et constitue un lieu d’innovation méthodologique pour l’anthropologie. Il est investi par des anthropologues de différents horizons, qu’ils travaillent comme praticiens ou dans le monde académique. Pour autant, l’ethnographie comme méthode de recueil des données peut effrayer les entrepreneurs et les commanditaires d’une étude, car les caractéristiques d’une recherche anthropologique seraient fondées sur des régimes de temporalités qui se télescopent avec ceux de l’entreprise. Outre la durée même d’une enquête selon les canons de la discipline, l’incertitude quant au résultat d’une démarche de terrain et au type de livrable qu’il est possible de proposer au terme d’une intervention constitue un double frein à la rencontre entre ces deux univers. L’objectif de cet article est d’interroger le rôle de la sérendipité, entendu ici comme résultant d’une temporalité caractérisée par l’incertitude, dans le champ de l’anthropologie de l’entreprise. Après un bref état de l’art sur l’usage et le recours à la sérendipité en anthropologie, nous déplaçons la focale dans le champ de l’entreprise. Nous analysons ainsi, à travers des exemples ethnographiques issus principalement du champ dudesign, le rôle de la sérendipité en entreprise en contexte d’anthropologie appliquée et fondamentale à la fois comme risque mais aussi comme levier pour valoriser une intervention anthropologique. Cette valence positive accordée à l’incertitude et donc à la sérendipité permet de renforcer le lien entre une anthropologie académique et une anthropologie opérationnelle dans le champ de l’entreprise en privilégiant la démarche spécifique de l’ethnographie.
