Quest'arte ha un nome serio: Storia!"This saying, from a poem recalled by Pietro Corsi as he filled out an author's questionnaire for Molisano journalist, Orazio Tanelli, can lead us into a reading of Corsi's work that recalls Giambattista Vico's idea of corso e ricorso, the recurring cycles of history.And, as we will see, it is history, more than literature, that Corsi has given us with his first novel, La giobba.Entitled Due rapporti in its original, 1965 publication, La giobba is two long stories of the immigrant experience: the story of Onofrio Annibalini, contadino and the story of Rob Perussi, ex studente.The paths of these two men cross as they struggle to survive in a foreign land.As in Pietro DiDonato's Christ in Concrete, the central focus of La giobba is the job.The search for a job became the twentieth-century odyssey which lured the immigrant to the myth that America would be the land of endless opportunity.Annibalini is one of the "birds of passage" who is led to believe that America is a promised land where ". . .c'è lavoro per tutta l'Italia" (26).He emigrates from Molise with the intention of making money, planning to return later to his homeland and to retire on an American pension.Expecting to find streets paved with gold, he discovers that they are covered with ice.Instead of a job, he discovers the inhumanity of unemployment.Looking for a place for himself in this new a4.
