Publikacja stanowi próbę opisania (bez ambicji do wyczerpania tematu) zjawiska kontrastu w języku, literaturze i kulturze. Tak szerokie ujęcie wspomnianej problematyki pozwala na wykazanie wielości możliwych interpretacji, zapewniając jednocześnie interdyscyplinarne podejście do zagadnienia. O naukowym charakterze publikacji decyduje dobór i układ treści, analizujących opisaną problematykę w oparciu o szeroki korpus tekstów z różnych epok i krajów, przy zastosowaniu wielu metodologii i wykorzystaniu obszernej, starannie dobranej bibliografii. Publikacja skierowana jest do szerokiego grona odbiorców: studentów, literaturoznawców, filologów, miłośników literatury i znawców języka francuskiego, w którym częściowo jest zredagowana.
