Abstract
There is an old Slovenian folk saying that claims that one Serb makes a regiment, two Croats make a parliament and three Slovenians make a quartet.The allusion is, of course, to the great love of singing which Slovenes, also called Slovenians, are not shy of displaying at the slightest hint of encouragement.In retrospect of the research to be presented here, perhaps the saying should be modified somewhat to 'one Slovenian makes a quartet of nationalities'.This study attempts to describe the specific circumstances of a relatively small group of Slovenes who are simultaneously Slovenian, Italian, Yugoslavian and Canadian, a plurinationalism that has its origins in the political situation in Europe between the two World Wars and immediately after.As far as it can be ascertained to date, however, no study has focused on this anomalous group, although it surely merits consideration by one or more of the fields dealing with sociology, linguistics and history.Since this paper presents a pilot study of this group, it is primarily empirical in nature.It considers the Italo-Slovenes in three perspectives, historical, cultural and linguistic.
