El presente artículo revisa y analiza teóricamente las estructuras cerebrales y el procesamiento de la información referente a la esfera religiosa-espiritual monoteísta judeo-cristiana. A partir de reflexiones: antropológicas, psicológicas y neurocientíficas, se brinda una explicación del “constructo dios” y la vinculación de éste con la fe, que es un componente cognitivo-emocional en la vida psicológica del creyente. Paralelamente se analiza uno de los mecanismos por el cual el humano se relaciona con la divinidad: la oración. Los objetivos de esta investigación fueron: 1) relacionar el afrontamiento espiritual y la percepción de la calidad de vida en personas que presentan cáncer, y 2) identificar las estructuras cerebrales que sirven de base al complejo religión. El tipo de estudio fue cuantitativo, de alcance correlacional–descriptivo; la muestra estuvo constituida por 100 personas que presentaban cáncer; los instrumentos psicométricos utilizados fueron: Escala de Estrategias de Afrontamiento Espiritual (SCS) y McGILL Cuestionario de Calidad de Vida (MQOL). La estrategia empleada con mayor frecuencia por los participantes fue: “confiar en Dios, con la esperanza de que las cosas van a mejorar”, con una media de 2.91 (DE=0.35), seguida por “mantener la relación con Dios y/o un poder superior, como la fuente de la fuerza y la esperanza”, con una media de 2.88 (DE=0.38), ambas estrategias pertenecientes al afrontamiento religioso. El afrontamiento espiritual no religioso se encontró levemente correlacionado de manera positiva con la calidad de vida global (Rs=.243) y sus síntomas físicos (Rs=.243); la subescala existencial (calidad de vida) y el uso de estrategias de afrontamiento correlacionaron de manera positiva y con una fuerza moderada.
