Abstract
Five years ago, in the very first issue of Italian Canadiana, I published a paper by the title "A Canadian in Italy at the end of the Enlightenment: Rossini's La cambiale di matrimonio."It investigated European perceptions of Canada and the New World toward the end of the Eighteenth century and provided an analysis and an assessment of Rossini's brilliant operatic debut in 1810.It was, above all, a study of the character of the protagonist, a strange, but wise and generous Mr. Slook, one of the first of very few Canadians to grace the European or the Italian stage.'Little could be said at the time of the genesis of the opera from a play by the same title composed, perhaps twenty years earlier, by an obscure Italian playwright who died at age 53, on December 23, 1802, eight years before Rossini's momentous transmogrification of his play.At birth, his name was Giambattista Viassolo, but, upon joining a compagnia di comici, he took on, for the rest of his life, the name of Camillo Federici and passed on to his children his new surname.This nom de plume originated from a farse he wrote in his youth, Camillo e Federico, and he assumed it in order to spare his middle class parents, who dreamed for him a more conventional career, the embarrassment and shame of his association with the theatre.Such were the times.ETA.
