Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

In her new book, The People of God: The Struggle for World Catholicism (Viking, 1989), Penny Lernoux deplores the imposition of a uniform monoculture on a diversity of national cultures as different as the colors of the rainbow.Such "restoration" is hardly a new phenomenon on a local scale. Thus, it was the norm for the American Catholic Church until it recognized in 1980 "the fact of religious and cultural pluralism . . .as a vital, fruitful and challenging phenomenon of our society."(National Catholic Council of Bishops, "Cultural Pluralism in the United States," 1980).It was still the norm of the Catholic Church in Toronto in the 1970s.In portraying the process of adjustment of Toronto's Italians, and the role in it of the Church, one can neither ignore ethnic diversity in Catholicism (H.J. Abramson, 1973), nor the sub-groups' dynamics within the social system in Ontario.Rather than the 'Canadianization' of Catholics, one must talk about the 'Canadianization' of Irish, Hungarians, and Italians. Moreover, in the case of Italian immigrants, their adjustment took place through the dominant Irish model.Catholicism at the time of Italian immigration to Toronto, in fact, was known as "the Irish Church," and continued "Irish in temper, tradition, and leadership."(R.T. Handy, 1977) At the same time, Catholics in Toronto were a minority.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
