EZIO MARCHETTOFor twenty-one years the life of Fr.Riccardo Polticchia was closely interwoven with the life of Toronto's Italian community.From 1936 to 1958 his pastorate, which was interrupted only for one year, made of St. Agnes' Church the point of reference for the thousands of Italian immigrants coming to the city and the prototype for all the churches, clubs and organizations established through the years for the Italian community.We can probably say that Padre Riccardo, as he was familiarly known, became an honorary member of almost every Italian household of Toronto from the depression years to the post-war period.His Life David Polticchia-who would later take the name Riccardowas born on June 6, 1885 in Santa Maria degli Angeli near Assisi in Italy.At the time, it was a very small village on the vast Assisi plain dominated by the solemn Church of Portiuncula.David's birth-place was an old house across the square from the Basilica called 7] Palazzaccio.The family was made up of: Erminia and Biagio Polticchia, the parents; Silvio the older son; David and four sisters.When Silvio entered the Seraphic College of Farnetto to become a Franciscan, David wanted to follow his brother, but, being the only male son at home, he encountered the opposition of the father.It was only after the birth of another son, Egidio, that Biagio Polticchia and his wife, Erminia
