Cet article dresse un portrait des avancées réalisées au cours des dix dernières années en prévention du suicide chez les jeunes en centres jeunesse. On y présente d’abord une synthèse des connaissances développées par la recherche en ce domaine. On y fait état des taux exceptionnellement élevés de suicides et de comportements suicidaires chez ce groupe de jeunes, des aspects liés aux différences de genre et de l’importance de la concomitance. L’article présente les principaux facteurs de risque du suicide tels que retrouvés chez les jeunes en centre jeunesse et décrit notamment la concomitance entre troubles mentaux, des troubles de consommation d’alcool et de drogues. Le rôle des événements de vie et des facteurs de protection du suicide est aussi abordé, de même que les projets innovants en matière de concertation développés afin de mieux traiter ces jeunes et prévenir le suicide. Enfin, on décrit par la suite les défis prioritaires en matière de prévention du suicide et de ses impacts chez les jeunes en centre jeunesse, notamment la nécessité de cibler le développement de nouveaux traitements mieux adaptés à la situation particulière des jeunes en centre jeunesse.
