Abstract
Le roman Quatrevingt-treize de Victor Hugo est traduit en chinois en 1912 par Zeng Pu (1872-1935), au lendemain de la révolution républicaine chinoise. Le traducteur, romancier de renom, est un lettré chinois qui a appris le français en autodidacte. Dans sa préface pour la réédition du roman hugolien en 1913, Zeng Pu, qualifiant le roman de poésie, met en avant l’humanité de Hugo et souligne le « coeur d’enfant » comme idée principale du roman. Sa traduction, en chinois semi-classique, réduit la part de la narration philosophique de Hugo, mais se concentre sur des scènes allégoriques et amplifie les descriptions des sentiments des personnages. Or, cette démarche romanesque et morale du traducteur n’est pas dépourvue de choix paradoxaux qui méritent une étude approfondie. Le présent article examine les singularités de cette traduction afin de mettre en lumière une certaine tentative subversive de la traduction à une période spécifique de la Chine moderne.
