Abstract
An oBserver in the 1840s in MoonCoin, irelAnd, or durinG the 1850s in Montreal, might have thought him a young Irishman like any other, who desired to become a Catholic priest and then to serve on the mission in British North America.Many a young man in Ireland or Montreal dreamed of being a missionary priest, after all, ministering in the parishes and mission stations scattered throughout the vast hinterland of pre-confederation Canada.Indeed, John Walsh was one such young man.To that end, he immigrated to Montreal in 1852 to take up studies at Le Grand Séminaire and, after his ordination to the priesthood in Toronto in 1854, to serve the Irish immigrants in the New World, alongside the several priests who earlier had emigrated from Ireland during the terrible 1840s.He seemed most likely destined for no other role.During those early years of John Walsh's ministry in the diocese of Toronto, there were other young priests, Irish and French-Canadian, who might have seemed more apt for promotion within clerical ranks, perhaps even more suitable to become bishops than John Walsh ever was.Without "connections" in the United Canadas, and not being a member of La compagnie des prêtres de Saint-Sulpice in Montreal (the influential ecclesiastics among the Canadian bishops before 1867), the lofty office of a bishop seemed out of reach for him.He was recognized, of course, as an intelligent young man, spiritually sound and congenial, yet he seemed like someone who was fitted to serve well as a parish priest for his life's work.Yet, that was not to be his story.However John Walsh may have been judged in his earlier and youthful days as a seminarian and young priest, he was by far unlike the many other Irish and French-Canadian men who passed through Montreal's seminary.Not only was he highly
