Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The southern elephant seal is the largest pinniped in the world and has a circumpolar distribution, undertaking long movements and migrations in the ocean in search of prey and suitable habitat. To provide further evidence of sightings of this species in Ecuador, we conducted interviews and literature reviews, visited sites, and collected and analyzed records from 1998 to 2020. We obtained records of fifteen individuals of M. leonina from the provinces of Los Ríos, Guayas, Galapagos, and Esmeraldas. Those individuals were regularly sighted during periods of reproduction and molting, but it is likely that oceanic thermal anomalies caused by El Niño-Southern Oscillation and La Niña events influence the movement and dispersal of this species outside its normal range. In Ecuador, M. leonina was observed hauling-out and resting without signs of emaciation. While almost all individuals left their resting places a few days after arrival, a subadult male reported in Los Ríos province remained for 13 days in an area close to shrimp farms and a populated rural area with around 60 homes, forcing authorities to sedate and transport the animal by land to the port of Posorja. We make recommendations for the appropriate management of vagrant pinnipeds arriving at or washing ashore on the coast of Ecuador, with the objective of ensuring the welfare of the animals and the safety of wildlife rescuers and park rangers.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
