ANDRÉ LAPIERRED'un intérêt culturel français mais destiné à un public anglophone, ce nouveau dictionnaire est une compilation de deux ouvrages publiés antérieurement par Picard, à savoir son Dictionnaire des noms de famille du Canada français (Picard 2019) dont le matériel est disponible en anglais pour la première fois suivi de son Dictionary of Americanized French-Canadian names (Picard 2013), véritable compagnon du premier titre, qui rend compte des nombreux changements subis par les noms de famille canadiens-français à la suite du grand exode, entre 1840 et les années 1920, des Québécois vers le Canada anglophone et surtout vers la Nouvelle-Angleterre et le Midwest américain.L'intention est claire: il s'agit de fournir au public anglophone un tableau d'ensemble de l'anthroponymie française sur le continent nord-américain, matériel qui était réservé jusqu'ici à un auditoire francophone plus restreint.Bien que l'auteur ne fournisse pas de statistiques sur le nombre total d'entrées de cette nouvelle compilation, on peut faire une extrapolation à partir du nombre moyen d'entrées par page et raisonnablement conclure que ce nouveau dictionnaire contient plus de 14 000 noms et variantes.L'ouvrage représente ainsi l'inventaire le plus complet de l'anthroponymie française en Amérique du Nord.Dans l'introduction, l'auteur explique pourquoi le traitement anthroponymique traditionnel de ces noms de famille se serait avéré difficile étant donné les multiples changements qu'ils ont subis depuis leur passage d'Europe vers le continent nord-américain.Dans les nombreux cas où il était impossible d'établir un lien avec la source européenne, il aurait été nécessaire de conclure à une origine indéterminée.Picard propose une solution astucieuse et originale à ce problème en ayant recours aux nombreuses données généalogiques canadiennes-françaises fournies par deux dictionnaires faisant
