Abstract
Jessie Luther's experiences as a crafts teacher at the Grenfell Mission were first recorded in notebooks compiled during four years at St Anthony, Newfoundland, and in letters Miss Luther wrote to her mother at Providence, Rhode Island.Following a busy career as an occupational therapist, she combined the two in the memoir "When the Grenfell Mission Was Young" and submitted it to Houghton Mifflin in Boston in 1948.When the manuscript was dismissed as too "specialized" for a general trade publisher, she appealed to her friend S. Foster Damon, the William Blake scholar at Brown University, for editorial advice, but Damon was busy with his own publishing projects and recommended offering an extract to the Atlantic Monthly to generate public interest.Miss Luther chose instead to submit the whole manuscript to Atlantic Monthly Press, now bearing the fresh title "The Uncharted Coast," and this too was rejected, in May 1949.Finally, she turned to Peggy Hitchcock, a professional editor who had worked on The Making of Yesterday
