O arquivamento da web tem sido reconhecido como uma ferramenta importante para preservar e proteger a memória cultural, científica e intelectual do mundo online. Desde a década de 1990, a importância do arquivamento da web tem sido amplamente reconhecida por organizações e indivíduos globalmente. Ainda que o Brasil possua diversos recursos técnicos e legislações que tratam da necessidade de preservação dos documentos governamentais, os websites ainda não foram incluídos nas práticas de gestão documental das instituições brasileiras, ainda que diversas iniciativas estejam acontecendo. Para entender este mecanismo como um instrumento de preservação do conteúdo publicado na web, assim como reconhecê-lo político e tecnicamente como algo possível, precisamos reconhecer as iniciativas desenvolvidas no país e, portanto, o objetivo deste estudo é identificar as ações e os documentos que estão relacionados ao desenvolvimento do arquivamento da web no Brasil. Este estudo foi apoiado na pesquisa bibliográfica e documental, utilizando literatura sobre arquivamento da web governamental, documentos e legislações referente ao desenvolvimento de iniciativas brasileiras no âmbito do arquivamento da web.
