Abstract
Urjo Kareda was a man whose passion for the performing arts defined his professional life. As the theatre critic for The Toronto Star, his enthusiasm for seeing new work and his ability to bring his intellectual prowess and affective response to his lucid discussions of the plays he reviewed, lent a critical voice that was crucial to the shaping of contemporary English-language theatre in Canada. Passion carried over to his criticism of opera and his contributions to CBC radio; among his various offerings was “Urjo’s Diary,” a weekly feature in which Urjo’s wry, astute comments were punctuated by the sound of a page being turned. As the Artistic Director of Tarragon Theatre, he redefined the role by focusing his efforts on working with playwrights to develop their work, rather than being a director. He read everything that was submitted, regardless of the source, and responded to each playwright who submitted work. He worked closely with the members of the Playwrights Unit at Tarragon, helping each to develop his or her craft. Urjo was committed, passionately, to the development of new work in Canadian theatre; his nurturing of new voices in the theatre has left a rich legacy of playwrights who, like Don Hannah, Joan Macleod, Jason Sherman and Judith Thompson became, in his life, established figures. Until his death, he was supporting the work of those whose careers are still in their early stages: Morwyn Brebner, Christine Buijs and Emma Roberts, to name but a few.
