Résumé Au Québec, 75% des élu·e·s municipaux de la province exercent leurs mandats dans des municipalités de moins de 10 000 h. Si l'on sait que la taille démographique de la municipalité est susceptible d'influencer le parcours et le profil des élu·e·s municipaux et plus généralement la professionnalisation de la fonction élective, rares sont les écrits qui, à notre connaissance, documentent la fonction élective au sein des municipalités québécoises de moins de 10 000 h., en comparaison avec celle exercée dans des municipalités de plus grande taille. Cela est d'autant plus surprenant que le contexte institutionnel, politique et financier peut varier grandement selon la taille de la municipalité et est ainsi susceptible de venir colorer la fonction élective au quotidien. À partir de la réalisation d'entrevues semi‐dirigées auprès d'une trentaine d'élu·e·s, nous mettrons en évidence deux spécificités. D'une part, si à leurs yeux, la fonction élective est la même que celle occupée par leurs homologues d'une grande municipalité, ils et elles considèrent ne pas disposer des mêmes outils pour répondre aux besoins de leur fonction. D'autre part, les conditions d'exercice de la fonction sont différentes, influençant leur quotidien. Ces constats questionnent de façon générale le fonctionnement de ces municipalités de taille modeste .
