Abstract
The topics covered in this paper focus on two case studies, including community transformation in Alberta, Canada, and the Portland Sustainable Community in the most livable cities in the United States. It begins with a detailed statement of how the two completely different communities have a general goal of community transformation and sustainable development planning through democratic dialogue and decision-making. Secondly, explore how citizens and governments living in Portland can implement sustainable lifestyles under the concept of sustainable consumption and survival, and integrate sustainable ideas into everyday life. The purpose of this paper is to introduce more specifically the theory and practice of sustainable development planning, which is widely available and useful to students, practitioners and non-professional readers. It is hoped that readers will personally participate in planning for sustainable development, whether through households, yards, community projects, or in larger political, economic, and social systems. All of our human members can play a role in achieving a more sustainable society. It is important to note that public understanding and participation are the most critical operational steps to truly implement sustainable planning development.
