Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The main objective of this research is to identify the relationship between the preservation of Spanish as a heritage language and sociolinguistic integration in a Canadian context or environment, specifically in the Quebec region, characterized by a large majority of Francophone speakers. For this, among others, the conceptual categories exposed by Moreno Fernández (2009) around the phenomena of migration and sociolinguistic integration that should, in theory, result in multiethnic and multicultural societies are taken up, but in which they also tend to present situations such as loss of linguistic identity, transculturation and social subordination. In this sense, a case study was carried out in which three informants of Colombian origin participated and expressed their points of view about the advantages, disadvantages and obstacles of preserving Spanish as a heritage language within the context experienced in Quebec. This information becomes especially relevant due to the small number of studies on this subject that have the participation of informants. After completing the investigation, it was concluded that in Canada there are no national public policies aiming to preserve heritage languages, due to main debates focusing on the confrontation between French and English speakers, ignoring heritage languages. Additionally, it was found that, although in some schools and educational entities you can take Spanish classes, these are optional and are conditioned to the prior learning of English and French.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
