Cet article propose d’appliquer un échantillonnage théorique à l’observation des dispositifs paratraduisants à l’oeuvre dans des espaces, notamment publics. Au préalable, deux questions doivent être démêlées. Selon la « traduction supposée » de Toury, la désignation d’un original à l’extérieur du système cible est impérative ; or, nous proposons de concevoir que ce postulat peut s’exercer sous la forme d’aménagements spatiaux qui reproduisent les processus traduisants à l’échelle du corps humain et du paysage. Nous supposons chez tous les individus la capacité de « grignoter » – le plus souvent en paratraduisant – la masse mouvante des textes et des objets supposément étrangers à leur société. Également, que la traduction est un fait social qui se pratique pour assurer le besoin constant de la liaison de l’« ailleurs » avec « l’ici ». À ce sujet, l’exogamie est un modèle de réflexion valable pour cerner la traduction en tant que fait social, étant donné que l’échange et l’alliance conduisent les unions à « l’extérieur » du groupe. Après avoir posé la participation de l’ensemble du groupe social aux tâches de paratraduction ainsi que la continuité entre la topologie des supports de texte avec celles des grands espaces, l’article égrène les caractéristiques de plusieurs terrains, et propose des approches méthodologiques permettant de topographier les stratégies d’invocation de l’« ailleurs ».
