Depuis le début du XXIe siècle, les milieux universitaires sont traversés par un nombre croissant d’actions menées par des minorités actives exigeant la censure de mots jugés « offensants », et ce au nom de groupes sociaux considérés comme historiquement « opprimés » par les « dominants ». Ces revendications sont généralement associées à ce qu’il est convenu d’appeler la « culture woke » et la « cancel culture ». En partant de cas canadiens récents ayant mené à la suspension de professeures dénoncées pour avoir utilisé, dans le cadre de leurs enseignements, le mot « nègre » plutôt que « mot en n », nous analyserons les conséquences prévisibles de ces censures lexicales sur la liberté académique et l’écriture de l’histoire. Annihilant la distanciation nécessaire à toute étude visant la compréhension de périodes et d’événements passés, ces revendications, oubliant que le passé n’est pas le présent et que la mémoire n’est pas l’histoire, pourraient, de façon paradoxale, aboutir à effacer cela même qui permet d’identifier la trace des oppressions, du racisme et de la haine et priveraient l’histoire de la possibilité d’analyser ces phénomènes sociaux.
