Abstract
McLuhan's Basic Probes and PerceptionsMarshall McLuhan, whose major work had been completed by 1970, died on 31 December 1980.Since then his name has become associated with a myth as much as with the life and work he really lived.Consequently, this chapter is primarily useful in providing a brief outline of the ongoing significance of his major contributions, particularly from 1954 until the early 19705, for those who did not live through those years or are not familiar with McLuhan's contributions to the contemporary scene.It provides some insight into the reasons McLuhan acquired an international reputation among media, politicians, academics, and artists, making him a twentieth-century archetype and culminating in his having become, in the closing decade of the last century, the patron saint of the "Wired World."At the end of World War Two, TV was in its infancy, the world of mass advertising was just becoming a controversial and dominant presence in society, and talking films were only a little over a decade old and movies in full colour were relatively recent, having first been established in commercial movie theatres in the early 193os. 1 Computers were scarcely a presence in the mind of the average person, much less among most of the university community.McLuhan, as a Canadian from a small city in the prairies, born in 1911 and growing to adulthood between the two World Wars, was simultaneously lured by two opposing colonial empires -the British, which was just beginning its decline, and the American, which was well on its way to ascendancy.Four of the most important factors that contributed to McLuhan's development from 1930 to 1946 are his intense interest in the earliest
