Abstract
Abstract Das Vorhandensein bestimmter Infrastrukturen ist nicht nur dadurch erklärbar, dass sie gewisse Funktionen erfüllen; ihre Einrichtung, Aufrechterhaltung, aber auch ihre Vernachlässigung werden angetrieben von jenen Kräften, die Cornelius Castoriadis als „Magma“ des sozialen Imaginären bezeichnet. Der Beitrag widmet sich den funktionslosen Überresten der Infrastrukturen des Kohleabbaus und der Stahlproduktion im Ruhrgebiet, deren große Hallen seit der Internationalen Bauausstellung Emscher Park (1989–1999) vielfach Kunst- und Kultureinrichtungen beherbergen und deren oberirdische Partien, wie Ferdinand Kriwet schon 1968 prophezeite, seitdem der „ästhetische[n] Betrachtung“ offenstehen. Um die Ästhetik industrieller Infrastruktur zu fassen, wird Castoriadis’ Theorie eines imaginären „Magma“ mit dem Denken eines „Kunstwollens“ verschränkt, das Alois Riegl und in seiner Nachfolge Wilhelm Worringer um 1900 ausformulierten: Für Riegl und Worringer geht jenes Wollen, das sich vor allem in Architektur und Gebrauchskunst zeigt, jeder Funktionalität voraus. Mit den von Riegl und Worringer stark beeinflussten Texten von Walter Benjamin stellt der Beitrag abschließend die Frage, welches „Kunstwollen“ und welches imaginäre „Magma“ aus den riesigen Industrieanlagen ablesbar wird.
